How to Dye Your Own Hair Red with At-Home Hair Color

How to Dye Your Own Hair Red with At-Home Hair Color

Go on-get fiery with these 5 must-know tips

When a light red once made my medium skin tone appear sallow, I swore off ginger. Now, I know a deeper hue works best. (My inspiration? A 2008-ish auburn Ashlee Simpson. Google it!)
1. Find your celeb "red twin."Skin tone is the most important thing to consider when choosing a red, if you don't want it to appear artificial. To make it look convincing, follow White's rules: If you're fair with pink undertones-like Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, or Julianne Moore-choose a strawberry blonde or copper. If you are medium or have yellow undertones to your skin, try a saturated auburn like Julia Roberts (circa 2006) or Debra Messing. Dark-skinned women are rarely born with red hair, but the general rule is the darker the skin, the richer the red.
2. Make it last."Red is the largest color molecule, so it fades in half the amount of time as brunette or blonde," says White. A permanent, oil-based formula helps drive the molecules deeper into the shaft and repel water, so your color stays put longer. Try Garnier Olia Oil Powered Permanent Color in Light Garnet Red or Dark Garnet Red3. Do a juice cleanse.Twice a week after shampooing and conditioning, rinse strands with unsweetened cranberry juice to help maintain your red's vibrancy.
4. Touch up all over. It's impossible for reds to build up, given their fast-to-fade nature. Apply to roots, lengths, and ends all at once.
5. Take (special) care.Minimize hot-water washes, and use a heat protectant before styling to seal the cuticle and prevent pigments from seeping out
